A Walk into the Past: From Casa do Cruzeiro to the Castle Above
One of the things I love most about living here—right next to Casa do Cruzeiro—is that history is quite literally at our feet. From the front door, it takes just two or three minutes on foot before you find yourself walking the same stones as people did centuries ago. This is no exaggeration: the Calçada Medieval, an old Roman road, winds its way up the hill and straight into the heart of the Vila Medieval de Ourém.
I walk this path often. And I always tell our guests—you should too. Because just beyond that stone path, a whole experience is waiting.

Vila Medieval de Ourém

As you pass beneath the archway into the medieval village, something shifts. The air gets a little quieter, the stones underfoot feel more intentional, and you realize—you’ve stepped into another time. The village isn’t frozen in history; it’s alive. Locals still live in these homes. Cats curl up on sunny doorsteps.
Wander a bit. There’s no rush. The narrow streets will pull you along past chapels, courtyards, and hidden corners where ivy and stone have been best friends for centuries.

Castelo de Ourém
There it is! Rising ahead, bold and proud, is the Castle of Ourém—a landmark not just of stone, but of stories. Originally built in the 12th century and later transformed by the 4th Count of Ourém in the 1400s, it blends the military aspect with simple elegance. Look closely and you’ll spot architectural influences from Italy and beyond—proof of Count Afonso’s love for beauty as much as practicality.
Walk its walls. Peek through its arched windows. Feel the breeze where once banners flew. The Paço dos Condes de Ourém, the Counts’ Palace within the castle, still holds echoes of its former splendor. Believe me, the pictures we took can't quite do it justic. The views from up here stretch across the Ribatejo hills, all the way to Fátima on a clear day. In fact, you can easily see our house-Casa do Cruzeiro. (Try to find it in the picture I took on the gallery below!)

Let me out a secret for you: as a regular visitor to the castle, we have only done it once but it worths a million! That is, to book a tour at the reception desk, and you will find yourself accompanied by a great guide who literally holds the key to those high castle towers, leading your paths deep inside the stone rooms, and taking you up to a different level of scenery spot.
The Museum and the Story Behind the Stones
Before or after exploring the castle, I recommend stepping into the museum. It’s well worth the time. Inside, you’ll find the history of the region laid out with care—especially the story of the castle’s restoration. Sometimes, there are temporary exhibitions too, bringing new layers to old stones. Check in—you might be surprised by what’s on.
Tips: Museum tickets are usually bundled with the castle entrance, and the staff is lovely—don’t hesitate to ask about what’s currently showing. :)

A Moment in the Square
At the top of the hill, near the statue of Dom Afonso, the castle square opens up to the sky and silence. It's a beautiful place to pause—whether to snap a photo or simply sit and take it all in. You’ve walked through layers of time. Let it settle.

On the Way Down: Church and Charm
As you follow the road back down, you’ll pass the village church. Modest and lovely, it's part of the daily rhythm of the people who live here. Step inside if often open—it holds a unique calm that’s hard to put into words.
And just a bit further, you’ll find one of our favorite local spots for a drink or a proper meal. (We’ve written more about it here—it’s not to be missed.)
A Few Tips
from a Neighbor (me!)

🕰️ Go early or late
The castle is loveliest when the sun is soft and the streets are quieter. Morning light brings everything to life. Late afternoon? Golden magic.
🥾 Comfy shoes matter
The path is ancient, uneven, and beautiful. Trust me—good soles = happy souls.
🍒 Try the local treat
Once you’ve soaked in all the views, pop into a café and order a Ginjinha d’Castelo. It’s a sweet cherry liqueur made right here in Ourém. Goes perfectly with a pastry and a good story.
